Joint Operations Command is faced with a deluge of unstructured data. Finding relevant information to support time sensitive decision making or other requests for information can be a very frustrating process – normal search does not match the authors’ use of words with the keyword entered into the search box. Similarly, the Joint Force Analysis Branch (JFAB) within VCDF Group was tasked with improving the management of lessons and creating links between unstructured captured lessons and strategic guidance, through to preparedness requirements and roles, training and activity objectives and operational outcomes.
We supported both organisations leverage semantic natural language processing capabilities to automatically apply relevant metadata to documents, emails, news and military messages. In the case of the JFAB’s Defence Lessons Program, we worked with Defence to design a suitable ontology to support lessons management objectives. The ontology provides a structured and consistent framework of Defence terminology for capturing and classifing Defence lessons. This supports a more efficient and accurate retrieval of lessons based on user search criteria.
A single instance of the semantic platform is now used to classify information across multiple data sources within JOC and also across the lessons repository. The solution delivers enhanced search and findability experiences in both SharePoint and within the lessons application. JOC is now the proud owner of one best, if not the best, search and findability solutions within Defence.
